One Service Only 9:00am
Summer Sermon Series on the Fruit of the Spirit –
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
There is no law against things like this.”
Galatians 5:22-23 (CEB)
“the process of being shaped according to the image of Christ by
the gracious working of the Holy Spirit”
M. Robert Mulholland Jr.
Spiritual Formation is the process by which people are shaped by God’s love and enabled to grow in their faith. We are spiritually formed through practices such as prayer, study, fasting, worship, and other disciplines.
Spiritual growth is vital to the health of any congregation. At our Church, we pride ourselves on the quality of our worship experiences, but we also realize that spiritual growth takes work beyond participation in a worship service. Therefore, we continue offering insight on each of the “Fruit of the Spirit” as the foundation for an understanding of Spiritual Formation.
During this time, we will continue sharing practices of Spiritual disciples, which later in the full will be go more in depth.
We just want to invite you to join us and open yourself to God’s possibilities to grow in our discipleship journey.

Hymns: “The Summons”, “When We Are Living”, “Pass It On”
– Joseph, who is 2nd only to Pharaoh, reveals himself to his brothers as the one that they sold into slavery. Instead of punishing them or making them grovel, he embraces them, weeps with them, and forgives them.
-In response to the question of how eternal life can be inherited, Jesus offers the Great Commandment, and then explains the practical outworking of this through the story of the Samaritan who helped the man beaten by robbers on the road to Jericho
God, we want to measure up to your hopes for us. Open our eyes to see the places in our world where our compassion can help. Give us loving hearts that we might reach out to our neighbors when they are in need.
Grant us the courage to take risks for the sake of your kingdom. Help us to live lives that are worthy of you. Amen

Child . . . One Hour . . . One Church . . . One School . . . One Mentor . . . One Prayer Partner
The Power of One! Fall 2018 will begin the fourth year that First UMC will partner with Pleasant Lane Elementary School via Kids Hope USA (KHUSA). What’s that? KHUSA is a national organization that was founded on research showing the dramatic positive impact that can be made on the life of a child by a caring, faithful and involved adult.
Opportunity: Be a Mentor! One hour each week, one adult mentor,
supported by one prayer partner, meets wit h one student each week school is in session.
Many children are waiting to have a relationship with someone who will:+ know their name + be a consisent presence + let them know they matter!
Opportunity: Be a Prayer Partner! Be a support person and pray regularly for your student, the mentor and for their relationship.
How many positions are available? However many volunteers our church is able to provide, there are at least that number of students at Pleasant Lane who will benefit from the KHUSA program! Yes, even in District 44 in Lombard, Illinois!
Is there any training available? Yes, it’s thorough and interesting and may be completed on line as your schedule allows.
What if I have more questions? Questions are always welcome. The site director at our church is Denise Karhoff King. There is also continued support available through the KHUSA website for all volunteers.
What’s my next step? Contact Denise at church or by email
Please remember the Kids Hope USA program, both local and national, in your prayers. We’re looking forward to our next year of service. Will you be there to make a difference for a child?
SCHOOL STARTS NEXT WEEK!
. . and some children at Pleasant Lane School in Lombard won’t have the required school supplies without our help.
*How can we at First UMC help?
